OMAHA — Chasers Charities, the charitable arm of the Omaha Storm Chasers, is proud to announce the recipients of the ninth annual Robinson Athletic Scholarship contest. Anita Jenkins from Omaha South High Magnet School and Malik Warner of Northwest High Magnet School will each be awarded a $500 scholarship from Chasers Charities. Both will be honored during a pre-game ceremony at Werner Park on Tuesday, April 26 prior to the Storm Chasers’ game versus the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.

“We congratulate both Anita and Malik, two very deserving recipients of the Robinson Athletic Scholarship,” said Storm Chasers President and General Manager Martie Cordaro. “We wish them the best as they continue on to their respective schools and look forward to them carrying on the legacy of Jackie Robinson.”

Jenkins, from Omaha South High Magnet School, plans to attend Iowa Western Community College, majoring in Athletic Training. She also plans to participate on the school’s Cross Country and Track and Field squads. Warner, from Northwest High Magnet School, plans to attend Midland University. He also expects to play for the university’s football program.

The Chasers Charities-Robinson Athletic Scholarship honors two local African-American students in an effort to commemorate the baseball legend that broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier in 1947. The recipients were chosen based upon their work in the classroom, involvement within the community, athletic achievement, and other qualities. To be eligible, students had to meet the following criteria:

  • United States citizen or permanent resident

  • Resident of Sarpy, Douglas, Cass, Lancaster or Pottawattamie County

  • Minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale

  • African-American and a high school student participating in athletics or school-sponsored activities

  • High school senior or graduate planning to enroll in a full-time undergraduate course of study at an accredited postsecondary institution
